Kissing Contest in Nanjing sparks controversy
A french kissing contest organised by an electric appliance shop in Nanjing, East China's Jiangsu Province on Christmas day, December 25, 2004 as part of a promotion has sparked controversy in conservative China, especially among the elder population, who from upon public displays of affection of intimacy.
The winners were reported to get a generous prize from the shop which aims to promote the sales of its "lovers' kit". Many local citizens frowned upon this event, urging authorities to prevent recurrence of similiar ones.
A similar french kissing contest has been planned for Valentine's Day 2005 in Tianjin, organised by a supermarket, which has announced a prize of 2000 yuan, or USD 240 for the couple who kiss the longest. Registration has started for the contest.
